2020 Foodscape Innovation Award Recipients Announced

The awards spotlight voluntary changes by the food and beverage industry. This year’s awards recognize two urban farming innovations for making healthy food more accessible to underserved communities.

Moonflower Farms

“Sustainable Farming Through Water Conservation” by Moonflower Farms in Houston developed an urban hydroponic farm that relies solely on rainwater to control costs and environmental impact. This farming method uses 95% less water than conventional farming. The city’s first vertical farm provides high-quality produce year-round at affordable prices to residents in underserved communities. Produce is also donated to local charitable food systems.

Restorative Farms

“Urban Farming Hub Solutions for Healthy Food & Jobs” by Restorative Farms implemented small-scale, professionally run urban farms that promote economic sustainability in an underserved community in South Dallas. Restorative Farms provides jobs, vocational training and healthy food at affordable prices to their neighbors.

What is the Foodscape?

Foodscape is our name for the food ecosystem — all the places and spaces where food is grown, manufactured, marketed, acquired, prepared, consumed, talked about or given meaning.

Who was eligible?

The awards are open to companies/organizations operating in the U.S. from all sectors of the food and beverage industry that work to increase health and equity in the food system, including:

  • Agriculture
  • Consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies
  • Ingredient suppliers
  • Packaging companies
  • Processors
  • Restaurants and foodservice
  • Retailers
  • Technology providers
  • Trade/commodity groups
  • Vending companies

Tobacco companies or their corporate subsidiaries, parent companies or foundations are not eligible.

Innovations must be original and must have been introduced into the marketplace on or after May 1, 2017.
